ARALDITE 2040

Main features

  • 165% Elongation at Break
  • About 50000 cP Viscosity
  • 0.05 to 0.10 mm Bondline

Product Description

ARALDITE 2040 A/B is a two-component flexible polyurethane adhesive supplied as a gray paste for bonding plastics and primed metals. The as-supplied adhesive has viscosity about 50000 cP at 25 deg C and density about 1.2 g/cm^3. A 0.05 to 0.10 mm adhesive layer normally gives the greatest lap shear strength in the stated joint guidance. Cured properties after the stated 16-hour cure at 40 deg C include 165% elongation at break under ISO 527, 9 MPa tensile strength under ISO 527 and 4 N/mm roller peel under ISO 4578. Applications include polycarbonate, polyamide and primed-metal bonding.

Key features

  • About 50000 cP viscosity: Measured at 25 deg C for the as-supplied adhesive.
  • 165% elongation at break: ISO 527 after the stated 16-hour cure at 40 deg C.
  • 0.05 to 0.10 mm bondline: This adhesive-layer range normally gives the greatest lap shear strength in the stated joint guidance.

Applications

Bonding polycarbonate, polyamides and primed metals.

Pot Life
Pot life is the amount of time it takes for the viscosity of a material to double (or quadruple for lower viscosity materials) in room temperature after a material is mixed. It is closely related to work life but it is not application dependent, less precise and more of a general indication of how fast a system is going to cure.
15 minutes
Thermal Properties
Glass Transition Temperature (Tg)
The glass transition temperature for organic adhesives is a temperature region where the polymers change from glassy and brittle to soft and rubbery. Increasing the temperature further continues the softening process as the viscosity drops too. Temperatures between the glass transition temperature and below the decomposition point of the adhesive are the best region for bonding. The glass-transition temperature Tg of a material characterizes the range of temperatures over which this glass transition occurs.
30 °C
Mechanical Properties
Elongation
Elongation is the process of lengthening something. It is a percentage that measures the initial, unstressed, length compared to the length of the material right before it breaks. It is commonly referred to as Ultimate Elongation or Tensile Elongation at break.
