Main features

  • 25,000 cP Viscosity
  • 1-Minute 180 deg C Cure
  • 15.3 kV/mm Dielectric Strength

Product Description

LOCTITE ABLESTIK A 316-43 is a one-component beige heat-cure epoxy paste for electronic encapsulation, potting, and casting. It is also used as an end-cap adhesive for high-temperature filters and for bonding aluminum oxide wafers to metal heat sinks. Typical cured aluminum-to-aluminum tensile lap-shear strength is 17.2 N/mm^2 at 25 deg C, and typical dielectric strength is 15.3 kV/mm. Recommended cure schedules are 20 minutes at 120 deg C, 3 minutes at 160 deg C, or 1 minute at 180 deg C. The adhesive is typically used over an operating-temperature range of -40 to 155 deg C.

Key features

  • Three heat-cure options: Cure schedules are 20 minutes at 120 deg C, 3 minutes at 160 deg C, or 1 minute at 180 deg C.
  • Electrical insulation: Typical cured volume resistivity is 1 x 10^14 ohm cm at 25 deg C and dielectric strength is 15.3 kV/mm.
  • Temperature-dependent hardness: Typical Shore D hardness is 88 at 25 deg C and 70 at 120 deg C.

Applications

Electronic encapsulation, potting and casting; high-temperature filter end-cap bonding; and aluminum oxide wafer bonding to metal heat sinks.

Physical Properties
Viscosity
Viscosity is a measurement of a fluid’s resistance to flow. Viscosity is commonly measured in centiPoise (cP). One cP is defined as the viscosity of water and all other viscosities are derived from this base. MPa is another common unit with a 1:1 conversion to cP. A product like honey would have a much higher viscosity -around 10,000 cPs- compared to water. As a result, honey would flow much slower out of a tipped glass than water would. The viscosity of a material can be decreased with an increase in temperature in order to better suit an application

Electrical Properties
Dielectric Strength
Dielectric strength is measured in kV per mm and is calculated by the Breakdown voltage divided by the thickness of the tested material. Those two properties go hand in hand and while Breakdown voltage is always thickness dependent, dielectric strength is a general material property. As an example, the dielectric strength of Polyimide is 236 kV/mm. If we place 1mm of Polyimide between two electrodes, it will act as an insulator until the voltage between the electrodes reaches 236 kV. At this point it will start acting as a good conductor, causing sparks, potential punctures and current flow.
15.3 kV/mm
Volume Resistivity
Volume resistivity, also called volume resistance, bulk resistance or bulk resistivity is a thickness dependent measurement of the resistivity of a material perpendicular to the plane of the surface.
